Specifications

1942 Ryan PT22

About 1800 of these aircraft were built for the military between 1941 and 1943 by the Ryan Aircraft Co.. Students received their first flight training in these airplanes jokingly known as a "Maytag Messerschmitt". The Maytag name was given because the engine sounds like an old Maytag washing machine and the "Messerschmitt" because the airplane handles like a little fighter. The airplane does nice aerobatics and will fly about 2 hours on one tank of fuel (24 gal.). There are about 150 of these airplanes still flying. This particular airplane has added landing gear fairings and a canopy which makes the airplane more comfortable during summer and winter.
